Abstract

Track and field was on an intramural basis when it was first accepted by the colleges. Later track and field became a major sport in the colleges and thus it had become a large part of their athletic programs. In this study one will find a chronicle of the track meets engaged in by Sam Houston State Teachers College track teams, beginning with the 1924 track season. The schedule contains the date of the track meet, the schools entered in the meet, the place where the meet was held and the total points scored by each school. Pertinent information about the Sam Houston athletes, outstanding events, the coach of the Sam Houston team and the conference winner is also given. Information about the track and field meets, the letterman from Sam Houston State Teachers College and the other pertinent information was obtained from The Houstonian, the Alcalde and the minutes of the Sam Houston State Teachers College Athletic Council. This information was checked by Mr. H. O. Crawford, track coach at this college for twenty-two years, from 1929 through the 1951 season. A brief history of the coaches is included. Track and field as a varsity sport was started at Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1924. At an earlier date, from 1910 to 1913 it was on an intramural basis and the first track meet appears to have been held in State Teachers College has been a member of two athletic conferences: The Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from 1923 through 1931 and the Lone Star Conference from 1932 to the present time.
