Abstract

Description

Three Sam Houston State University Studio Art majors would like to propose a site-specific installation on the grounds of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. This installation will reflect Sam Houston's life and honor that he maintained throughout his life. Within this work a connection will be made between Sam Houston and his life involved in politics and his time spent with the Cherokee Indians. Sam Houston was able to fulfill his political duties but also defend the Cherokees and help them in such a way not to lose everything. Sam Houston was caught in the middle of doing his duty and what he felt was right. The artwork will tie together the section near Indian hill that is formed with rock walls. The word "HONOR" will be placed in a rounded form creating a unified circle representing the ring that was engraved with that word which his mother gave him when he was younger. Behind the word "HONOR" will be two 15 foot-wide arches that extend outward on either side and lie in the surrounding land. The arch on the left will reflect Sam Houston and his refusal to disgrace Texas. The arch on the right will represent Sam Houston's dedication to help the Cherokee Indians fight for their right for land. The work will reflect how Sam Houston fought and struggled to be an honorable man.
