The leveraging of sources that provide information is critical to criminal investigations, and with declining recruitment and retention issues, ways to maximize manpower are of utmost importance. Advancements in technologies have created opportunities for investigators to leverage sources such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) and crowdsourcing. Advancements in CCTV have resulted in higher quality images, providing investigators with an increased likelihood of useable footage. By using social media and other means, investigators can proactively orchestrate crowdsourcing and take advantage of the vast amounts of information generated by the masses. This culminates in the ability to access information that would otherwise remain untapped and can result in more cases being solved. Integrating the use of CCTV footage and crowdsourcing with standard investigative procedures can assist investigators with suspect identification, location of additional evidence, and generation of leads. Thus, law enforcement agencies should utilize CCTV and crowdsourcing in criminal investigations.
