Abstract

Law enforcement agencies have a responsibility to provide training to enhance the livability of their employees. Financial literary is a common problem with police officers, dispatchers, and other civilian personnel. Without having proper techniques and strategies to properly handle the costs of living, purchases, expenses and preparation for retirement, employees can develop adverse money management habits. Without proper money management skills, employees may experience negative emotional and psychological effects. These effects can ultimately affect the employee’s job satisfaction, performance, and create an unpleasant home life. Employees that have poor money management comprehension or skills, and who are unable to make ends meet, will seek other avenues to increase their income. This causes the employee to work overtime, off duty assignments, or even obtain a second job. Overworking causes physical and mental fatigue, which will impact the employee’s work and home life. Money empowers individuals; therefore, not having an efficient amount of funds, could lead to unethical behaviors and possible corruption.
