dc.description.abstract | Purpose: Since discipline is the basic foundation required for implementation of other programs, this study will attempt to describe what type of behavior can be expected from first offenders during their first year in prison after transfer from the Diagnostic Unit of the Texas Department of Corrections. First offenders in this study were those inmates who had not been previously confined in a prison and were subsequently assigned to the Ferguson Unit of the Texas Department of Corrections. This study will describe the adjustment of these inmates as measured by the number and severity of their rule violations and subsequent disciplinary actions. It will provide information such as the number of rule violations one can expect from the general inmate population, the severity of the rule violations, the affect of the frequency of visits on discipline, and the relationship between various social and criminal history variables and adjustment. The number of disciplinary actions were correlated to the inmate's personal characteristics, criminal history, medical condition, history and frequency of visits at the prison, and ratings received under the Point Incentive Program of the Texas Department of Corrections. Finally, the study was an attempt to determine the degree of relationship of each variable with the number of rule violations. | |
